To 49ers CEO Jed York, I Apologize

Dear Mr. York,

As a lifelong San Francisco 49ers fan I have had the pleasure of living through some of the greatest days in Niners history. As a child, I remember watching Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Roger Craig dominate the NFL through the 80s under the tutelage of the great Bill Walsh. For as sad as I was to see Joe go in the 90s, I believed in Steve Young and was one of the few 49ers faithful who knew he would take us back to the promised land. Soon enough, he did.

Your uncle Eddie DeBartolo was a hero among 49ers fans. Who could sustain such a successful team for so long? Even after Steve left, along came Jeff Garcia who had some great success. I believe he and coach Steve Mariucci could done some great things long-term.

Then came the dark days. I must be honest, I blamed your dad John York for years, as did many fans. Suffering through Dennis Erickson, GM Terry Donahue and Mike Nolan was just terrible. I couldn’t stand it! I just couldn’t take the losing. Your dad killed this once proud franchise. Nonetheless, I remained true to my 49ers fandom.

Then in 2008, the team announced that you were taking over as team president. I’ll admit, I was less than enthusiastic. I even used names like “Brainless II.” I had ZERO faith in you. As someone with a corporate background, I viewed you as an inexperienced executive given the job because of who you were related to. However, since that moment you have done nothing but move this team back to prominence.

You have put the right people in the organization who in turn have put the right players and personnel on the field. Even when I was slightly skeptical of Jim Harbaugh, it has been nothing short of amazing. As we are on the brink of the franchise’s sixth Super Bowl appearance for the second straight year, we are in the dawn of a new era at quarterback. It’s another chapter in the Niners’ storied history at the position. Colin Kaepernick appears to be the future, and the defense is one of the nastiest I’ve seen come out of San Francisco. Plus, we’re FINALLY leaving Candlestick Park!

I say all this to say that you have returned the 49ers to the elite of the NFL. Hell, we even won a playoff game against the Packers. You have more than proven that this team’s success is your top priority. For that, on behalf of Niners nation and fans everywhere…I apologize.

WHO’S GOT IT BETTER THAN US? NOOOO BODY!”
