Making the Cut

Making the Cut

What makes a player Hall of Fame worthy? Is it statistics alone, or are off-the-field behavior and intangibles included as well? HOF voting can be a complex task, especially for pro football. Given how the game has evolved continuously over the years, what may have been a dominant career 20 years ago may only be an average one in the present day. A certain player has come under recent discussion regarding if he should be given the honor of being enshrined in Canton.

I am going to conduct an experiment and YOU THE READER will assist me. I will compare the career statistics of several players and YOU will tell me if they are HOF worthy. Many times when discussing great players, fans are affected by personal biases towards their favorite player. So in the interest of fairness, we will keep the players anonymous and base this strictly on merit.

Below you will find the four players I have selected. Review their stats, and then vote on the poll to the left of the page. Once the poll has closed, I will discuss their results, some of which may surprise you. I only ask that you not attempt to research who the players are. If you know who they are, try to remain unbiased as much as possible.

You should get into the NFL Hall of Fame because of your accomplishments in the NFL. Just that. It's not a "Good Person" Hall of Fame. Warren Moon beat his wife but he was a great QB. He never won a Super Bowl. Neither did Marino. Eli Manning (who can die and go to hell tomorrow) has won a Super Bowl and was the Super Bowl MVP. Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl and is known as the QB that no one can remember from the Ravens Super Bowl team. I answer your question with a hypothetical question. Let's say a professional athlete has a phenomenal career and has finished it or is at the top of it. Does it change anything that he kills two people (allegedly), cheats on his wife with women around the country or bets of baseball? I think not. FYI world, you can be talented and just a horrible person. They can be one and the same!

I agree Mike, which makes it a travesty that Pete Rose is not in the Hall of Fame. The whole purpose of baseball is to hit the ball and the guy who did it the most is not allowed?!?! I think you & I are the only people that knew the Ravens QB was Trent Dilfer.

Though I agree with Mike and Justin, I also think that not winning a super bowl hinders one's chances of making it into the HOF. Especially, now when teams want to see positive results in a very short period of time. More team owners are cutting players and coaching staff hoping to get to the big game. It's all about winning and rings! If a player/team isn't producing either the likelihood of them being around for a long period of time is slim to none. Which in turn determines who's in/out of the HOF.
